Layers
I just walked six miles. In a dress. Granted, I'm wearing the dress over a pair of jeans, but I'm also wearing the jeans over a pair of tights. It's cold outside and I need to Superman it later today and find a phone booth to change out of the Clark Kent jeans and cardi and put on my superhero boots to go to a party.
Sometimes I wonder about my life.
Going out last night might not have been the best idea I've ever had. I did manage to tuck myself into bed at one or so, but the alarms rang too early, pulling me out of bed to start the day, setting my hair, trying to figure out how to dress for my day.
"Comfortable," I thought. I needed something warm enough for the temperatures outsides, teens moving into the twenties and then thirties as I walked from Eastern Market to Arlington Courthouse.
"Pretty," I thought of the party at night, an early Mardi Gras celebration with transplants from NOLA, book-loving friends and strangers.
Everything I wore in between would be some combination of the two and so I layered tights and jeans, tank, dress and sweater, and I started walking, with boots in my bag and a book for the late-night Metro ride home that I could barely envision as it was only nine in the morning.
Eastern Market to the Capitol, the Washington, the Lincoln, across the Memorial Bridge, through Arlington National Cemetery past the Carillon and Iwo Jima, through Arlington to one of my offices to pick up the sweater I left last night. Grab a bite to eat. A soda. Write a little. And now I'm off to see Benjamin Button. It's barely past noon.
Sometimes I wonder about my life. All I know is that I like it.

I've pulled off the Superman more times than I can count. It's a valuable skill as a woman... layers are definitely key.
