Working at Home

I don't get snow days. Even if the federal government shuts down, instead of running at a two-hour delay, I have to work.
Honestly, I can get into work. I walk. I take the Metro. It's not a hazard for me to go into the office, but today I'm staying home.
I've got a portable job and a work-issued laptop. The daily schedule reads WAH (working at home) for almost everyone, for almost all day.
I have tasks that I can do anywhere in the world - from an apartment in Argentina, from an internet cafe in India, from the lobby of a hostel called the Purple Cow on the South Island of New Zealand. From New Orleans. From Seattle. From my grandma's house in Minnesota.
I have queries to run. Data to analyze. Briefings to write. Most of the time, I go into the office because the client likes seeing me, for the social interaction and the concepts that are best conveyed face to face with meetings and drawings on a whiteboard, dropping by someone's office and bumping into each other in the hall.
On days like today, though, I can work at home. The queries are running. I'm analyzing data, and I'll call into an afternoon meeting. I'll just do it all in my yoga pants and sweatshirt with snow outside, a fire in the fireplace and Freaks and Geeks on TV.

Good for you - Enjoy the day!
great to work at home, how relaxing! Purple Cow hostel? Sounds intriguing... :)
You're lucky your job is so portable. We dealt with sensitive data that we could only use onsite so it was not really an option for me to work at home.
Mel - It's been perfectly lovely here in front of the fire. I hope you didn't suffer too much from snow cancellations, delays and misery.
Karen - As a child, I had a recurring nightmare about a Purple Cow that I needed to eradicate. The town also had my favorite movie theater in the world, complete with couches, a convertible and a midmovie break for fresh, hot chocolate chip cookies.
Barbara - It's not all portable, but I'm grateful for the bits that are. (Unfortunately, though, it means I blur the lines between work and home.)
Today was a great day to stay home. I'm glad school was cancelled. I was on the computer all day long (in my pajamas) working on a paper. If it was pretty outside, I didn't see it. That's pretty cool that you have such a flexible work situation.
sounds perfect - enjoy!
